A great case of international success through exhibitions – Green Power Electronics

January 11, 2011

Green Power Electronics recently attended WIS(World IT Show) in Seoul, where it was a prime opportunity for the company to meet with several large-scale international buyers invited by the trade organization. Green Power Electronics was especially satisfied with their attendance as their product was selected as ‘product of excellence’ to be displayed at the conference hall.

“Attending an exhibition abroad at least once is much more effective than staying in Korea trying to advertise globally.”

Jinsub Son, CEO of Green Power Electronics bluntly expressed his devotion towards international exhibitions. His reasoning is that not only can he meet buyers from multiple countries all in one venue, but also it is a prime location of opportunity to actively promote his products.

Green Power Electronics has received several awards including the ‘New Exporters 300’ awarded by the trade organization, and ‘Promising Exporting Small Business’ awarded by the Small and Medium Business Administration. Their current goal is to be on the same level of excellence as Belkin within 3 years, a company that has a reputation of making mobile electronics masterpieces.

This goal is not all just dreams and wishes either, as Green Power Electronics has already developed and produced products that no other companies, including Belkin, has ever made before.

Exhibitions, the optimal marketing space

Green Power Electronics’ main products are Apple accessories. They have signed an official contract with Apple in February 2009, and recently made export arrangements with major buyers from the US, UK, Japan, France, Australia and more, for their sunlight powered iPhone 4G batteries.

The GP400is developed by Green Power Electronics is the first ever Apple-approved sunlight powered charging device for the iPhone 4G. The product conveniently allows users to charge their phones outdoors, especially useful in emergencies.

Currently exporting to US, Japan, Australia, Germany, Spain, France, Vietnam, China and more, Green Power Electronics is confident that their exports are going to keep growing at a fast pace.

CEO Son is aiming for 400~500 thousand dollars in sales this year, and 10 million dollars in sales next year. He is affirmative that this could be achieved once Green Power Electronics adds new product lines for the iPad or adds DMB functions to existing products.

Behind his confidence is a solid marketing strategy set by exhibition attendances abroad. For Green Power Electronics, these exhibitions are the prime locations for marketing against the foreign market where more than 55 million iPhone 3Gs and 14 million iPhone 4Gs have been sold. Not only they get to meet buyers from various countries, but also they can maximize the effects of their product advertisements.

Once you meet a buyer, you will meet them again in the future

Green Power Electronics recently attended WIS(World IT Show) in Seoul, where it was a prime opportunity for the company to meet with several large-scale international buyers invited by the trade organization. Green Power Electronics was especially satisfied with their attendance as their product was selected as ‘product of excellence’ to be displayed at the conference hall.

Green Power Electronics met with 180 foreign buyers during the WIS this year. Among these buyers were some new buyers, but most of them were buyers that Green Power Electronics has already met in several exhibitions abroad. Based on CEO Son’s experience, buyers with previous acquaintance or business are more likely to sign a contract.

Son also emphasized the importance of maintaining these contacts after attending the events. This can be done by informing the buyers about new products that just came out, and regularly contacting them to make sure they have a good relationship. Son claims that even if there is no progress at the exhibition grounds, these contacts after the exhibition builds trust and reliability for the buyers. This was Green Power Electronics’ main strategy to gain trustworthiness from multiple international buyers.

When Green Power Electronics first attended an event, they did not have a brand reputation for their products. Buyers did not immediately sign a contract with Green Power Electronics even if the products at the exhibitions were good quality. This is because it is a risky decision to sign a contract with a company that has not proven their production efficiency or guarantees yet. Therefore, Green Power Electronics had to invest nearly a year just testing data before landing their first contract with an American company, and since built up their reputation by constantly releasing brand new products. Naturally buyers started to sign regular contracts with Green Power Electronics ever since.

Green Power Electronics once attended an exhibition as one of the companies in the Apple Zone, instead of the Korean Booth. This event zone specifically for Apple products costed them 4 times more to attend, but granted them opportunities to meet with large-scale buyers such as a European buyer who owns more than 10 million stores across Europe, and a German buyer with capacities as large as Korea’s KT.

Many companies attending exhibitions attend solely by looking at the names of these exhibitions. However, thinking that simply attending will grant them contracts is a mistake.

CEO Son says that to sign contracts with the buyers at the scene, it is important to test the procuts in advance to ensure top quality and prepare for around 3 months. He also stressed the importance of preparing for potential questions asked by buyers.
